What Is an Arcade, and Why Is It Great for Family Fun?

An arcade is an entertainment space featuring games that visitors can play for fun, competition or, where available, tickets and prizes. Depending on the venue, these may include racing simulators, basketball shooting games, interactive video games, air hockey and other skill-based attractions.

Unlike activities that require extensive planning, an arcade visit can be as simple as arriving with friends, choosing a few games and enjoying some friendly competition.

Here are some reasons arcades appeal to different groups.

Entertainment for Children and Adults

Arcade games can provide a shared activity for family members of different ages. Children can explore suitable games while parents join in, cheer them on or enjoy their own challenges.

The key is to choose games that match each player's age, interests and abilities.

Friendly Competition

Many arcade games encourage players to beat their previous scores, improve their skills or challenge friends and family members.

A little competition can make a family outing more engaging, especially when everyone takes turns and celebrates each other's achievements.

A Rewarding Experience

Some arcades feature ticket-based games where players earn tickets based on their performance and exchange them for prizes, subject to the venue's rules.

The opportunity to collect tickets and choose a reward can add excitement for children. However, game mechanics and reward systems differ by venue, so check what is available before visiting.

An Easy Addition to Special Occasions

Arcade visits can complement birthdays, school-holiday outings, family reunions and informal group gatherings.

Rather than organising a separate activity after a meal, you can choose a destination where gaming and dining can form part of the same outing.

Popular Arcade Games to Try

Arcades can feature a variety of games, from quick challenges to activities that encourage players to practise their skills. The exact selection depends on the venue.

Here are some popular arcade game types to look out for.

1. Racing Games

Racing games let players experience virtual driving challenges, compete against opponents and try to finish ahead of the competition.

They are often popular with older children, teenagers and adults who enjoy speed, strategy and improving their scores.

For a family visit, check whether the racing machines are suitable for younger players and whether different difficulty settings are available.

2. Basketball Shooting Games

Basketball arcade games challenge players to score as many baskets as possible before the timer runs out.

They are easy to understand and work well for friendly competitions between siblings, friends or colleagues.

You can make the game more interesting by setting informal challenges, such as seeing who can achieve the highest score over several rounds.

3. Ticket and Prize Games

Ticket redemption games reward players with tickets or points according to the rules of each game. These can then be exchanged for eligible prizes where the arcade offers a redemption system.

For children, choosing a prize can become one of the highlights of the visit. Parents should establish a spending limit beforehand and explain how the ticket or prize system works.

Always check the number of tickets required for rewards and whether tickets expire or have other restrictions.

4. Air Hockey

Air hockey is a fast-paced game that encourages quick reactions and friendly competition between two players.

It can be a fun choice for siblings, couples and friends looking for a short challenge between other activities.

If your group is large, organise a simple knockout competition so everyone gets an opportunity to play.

5. Interactive Video Games

Interactive arcade games can include rhythm challenges, digital adventures and other games that respond to players' movements or decisions.

These games can be appealing to children and teenagers who enjoy technology and interactive entertainment.

Check age recommendations and game instructions before allowing younger children to play independently.

Discover Arcade Fun at Providha Fun City in Ikeja

If you want to include arcade gaming in your next family outing, Providha Fun City is a destination to explore in Ikeja, Lagos.

What makes the destination worth considering is the opportunity to plan more than a gaming session. Alongside its arcade, Providha Fun City features Hotel & Suites accommodation and dining options, including Back Porch Restaurant and De Plate Cafeteria.

This gives families, birthday groups and other visitors the option to organise their time around different activities without necessarily travelling between separate venues.

Make the Arcade Part of Your Family Day

A family arcade outing does not need an elaborate schedule. You can arrive, choose games that suit your group and enjoy some friendly competition before taking a break for food.

At Providha Fun City, you can enquire about combining your arcade visit with the Family Day Pass.

Before booking, ask what the pass includes, which activities are covered, how many people it accommodates and whether game credits, food or other services are charged separately.

A little preparation will help you estimate the total cost and decide how much time to set aside for gaming.

Combine Gaming with a Meal

After a few rounds of racing, basketball or other arcade games, a meal can be a welcome part of the experience.

Providha Fun City offers two dining options to explore:

• Back Porch Restaurant: Consider this option when planning a sit-down meal as part of your outing. Ask about the current menu, seating arrangements and reservations.

• De Plate Cafeteria: Explore this option for another dining experience within the destination. Confirm the available menu, prices and service hours before arriving.

Planning your meal alongside your games can make the outing easier to organise, particularly when visiting with children or a larger group.

Extend the Experience with an Overnight Stay

Why end the fun as soon as the games are over?

If you want to turn a day out into a weekend break, enquire about accommodation at Providha Fun City's Hotel & Suites.

You can also ask about the Seafood & Stay and Weekend Experience packages to determine whether either suits your plans.

Confirm room availability, package inclusions, dining arrangements, check-in times and additional charges before making a reservation.

How to Plan a Stress-Free Arcade Birthday Party

Arcade birthdays can be a fun alternative to traditional parties, especially for children who enjoy games and friendly competition. They can also work for teenagers and adults looking for a lively way to celebrate.

The secret to a successful arcade birthday is to plan the essentials before the guests arrive.

Step 1: Choose Your Guest List

Start by deciding how many people you want to invite. The size of your group will influence your budget, game arrangements, dining requirements and whether you need a dedicated party space.

If you are considering Providha Fun City, contact the venue to ask about birthday packages, group bookings and the facilities available for celebrations.

Step 2: Set a Realistic Budget

Your budget should account for more than the party itself.

Consider the cost of:

• Arcade games or game credits.

• Food and drinks.

• Decorations and cake, if permitted.

• Any birthday package or venue charges.

• Additional entertainment or activities.

• Transport and any accommodation requirements.

Request a complete quotation so you know what is included and what will cost extra.

Step 3: Plan the Gaming Activities

Choose games that suit the guests' ages and interests. A mix of short challenges and games that accommodate different skill levels can help keep everyone involved.

For children, plan breaks and make sure they understand how to use the machines safely.

For a group celebration, you could introduce friendly competitions, score challenges or small prizes, provided these fit the venue's rules.

Step 4: Arrange Food and Refreshments

Food can be an important part of any birthday celebration. Ask whether your preferred dining option can accommodate your group and whether advance food orders are available.

At Providha Fun City, enquire about Back Porch Restaurant and De Plate Cafeteria to determine which option suits your celebration.

Confirm menu prices, seating capacity, dietary requirements and any rules about bringing in outside food or birthday cakes.

Step 5: Confirm the Details Before the Day

Before making your final arrangements, verify the date, arrival time, guest count, payment requirements and cancellation policy.

Ask whether the venue offers any birthday packages and request the full details in writing. This will help you avoid unexpected expenses and make the day easier to manage.

Arcade Outings for Corporate Groups and Team Bonding

Arcades are not only for children. They can also provide a relaxed environment for colleagues to connect outside the usual office routine.

A group arcade visit can introduce friendly competition and create opportunities for coworkers to interact in a less formal setting.

If you are organising a corporate outing at Providha Fun City, consider the following:

Agree on a budget. Establish the amount available per participant and determine whether the company will cover games, meals or other activities.

Plan for different preferences. Not everyone enjoys the same games, so allow participants to choose activities that suit them.

Arrange group dining. Enquire about seating and menu options at Back Porch Restaurant or De Plate Cafeteria.

Confirm group requirements. Ask about reservations, available facilities, timing and whether group packages are offered.

Allow enough time. Build your schedule around the games, meal and any other activities your group wants to enjoy.

Providha Fun City is worth enquiring about if you want to combine arcade entertainment and dining at one destination. Confirm its current corporate group arrangements directly with the venue.

How Much Should You Budget for an Arcade Visit in Lagos?

The cost of an arcade outing depends on the venue, the number of games you play, the payment system and whether you add food or other activities.

Some arcades charge per game, while others may offer game credits, prepaid cards or packages. Prize redemption games can also involve different ticket requirements.

Before visiting Providha Fun City, ask about its current arcade pricing and payment arrangements.

To manage your budget effectively:

• Set a spending limit for each person.

• Ask whether games are paid for individually or through a credit system.

• Confirm whether any package includes arcade access or game credits.

• Check whether prizes require additional tickets or payments.

• Set aside money for food and drinks.

• Ask about group rates or special offers, if available.

If you are visiting with children, explain the budget before entering the arcade. This can help them choose their games carefully and enjoy the experience without pressure to keep spending.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Arcade Visit with Children

A little preparation can help make the experience enjoyable for the whole family.

Choose Age-Appropriate Games

Check age recommendations and make sure children can comfortably reach and operate the games they choose.

Younger children may need an adult nearby, especially around larger machines or activities with moving parts.

Establish Rules Before Playing

Explain how to take turns, follow instructions and treat equipment carefully.

If your children are using ticket-based games, agree on how many games they can play or how much they can spend.

Keep an Eye on Younger Children

Arcades can become busy, particularly during weekends and school holidays. Supervise younger children and establish a meeting point in case anyone becomes separated from the group.

Take Breaks

Encourage children to take breaks between games, drink water and move around when appropriate.

If your visit includes dining, schedule a meal break rather than allowing gaming to occupy the entire outing.

Check the Venue's Rules

Ask about age restrictions, supervision requirements, game availability and any relevant safety instructions before your visit.

For Providha Fun City, contact the venue directly to confirm its current policies and operating hours.

Best Time to Visit an Arcade in Lagos

The best time depends on your schedule and whether you prefer a quieter visit or a livelier atmosphere.

Weekday Visits

If your schedule allows, consider visiting on a weekday. Depending on the venue's traffic, this may provide a more relaxed experience and make it easier to organise a family outing.

Confirm opening hours and game availability before setting out.

Weekends and Public Holidays

Weekends and public holidays can be convenient for families, birthday celebrations and group outings. However, they may also be busier.

If you plan to visit Providha Fun City during a peak period, enquire about opening hours, reservations and available packages in advance.

Birthday and Group Bookings

For larger groups, avoid relying on walk-in availability. Contact the venue ahead of time to discuss the guest count, activities, dining requirements and payment terms.

If you need a specific time slot or special arrangements, request written confirmation.
